The problematization of consumers in Swedish financial literacy education

Using the concept of problematization, this paper reveals rationale for governing consumers in practice Swedish financial literacy education. Before 1980s, problematization was characterized by teaching economic thrift to ‘at-risk groups’. Through observations and interviews with teachers organizers, as well analyzes policy texts, study shows that contemporary education instead describes a whole population lacking ‘financial self-confidence’. This also how social, political, developments prompted previously unnoticed issue citizens’ literacy’. Neo-liberal ideas reforms, financialization, Organization Economic Cooperation Development’s promotion are all strong factors current ongoing Financial attempts foster economically rational, responsible, self-reliant citizens; other words, it seeks make people more like ‘virtual consumer’ neo- classic theory. The ideal consumer is expected turn markets ensure his or her welfare. Doing so assumed lead contribute efficient stable global national markets. However, consistent local having diverse problems needs relation finance, such adjusted fit different categories consumers. While some said require ‘inspiration’ become active engaged consumers, traditional morality still characterizes tailored deemed be at risk over-indebtedness.
